Meta-aramid

Meta-aramids belong to the family of aromatic polyamides (aramids) and differ from para-aramid fibers in their molecular structure and resulting properties.

Effectively, this means that meta-aramids have lower strength than para-aramids, but higher temperature resistance.

Meta aramid fibres

Accordingly, meta-aramid fibers are used wherever heat protection or flame retardancy is required. Examples include heat shielding in the automotive sector or insulating materials in electric motors and transformers.

The example shown is 1 mm meta-aramid staple fiber. In this application example, it is important that the fibers have a homogeneous length. FibreShape can be used to monitor compliance with the quality requirements of the cut material. Changes in the statistical distribution allow conclusions to be drawn about the condition of the cutting tool.

A special metrological feature of meta-aramid fibers is that they fade under certain lighting angles when line lighting is used. Here, metrological inaccuracies can be avoided by using an angle filter.
